Wangford Village Picture Tour

June 2022
Here we have two addendum to the original tour, in relation to the Old Post Office and the Coach House in the grounds of St. Peter and St. Paul's Church. These two aspects have been highlighted to us by Wangford residents and while they are not part of the original tour by Douglas Howeld or the additions by Peter Muttitt we feel they are still of interest nonetheless so are added here as an extra part of the Wangford village tour.

The Old(er) Post Office

The Old Post Office dated 1879The Old Post Office dated 1879.

The old Post Office sits at the junction roads of High Street and Church Road opposite the historic Angel Inn. The date mark on the very top corner shows 1879 as the year of completion and there are photos (marked "High Street 1"; half way down the page) of this establishment being a working Post Office and general shop up to around 1915.

We believe this building to be the correct building mentioned, although a later Post Office is photographed, in the original tour at the end of Page 2.

Here the date "1879" and inscription "POST OFFICE" are more clearly visible above the window Here the Date Stone "1879" and inscription "POST OFFICE"
are more clearly visible above the upper window.

The Henham Estate Coach House

The Henham Estate coach house sits in the churchyard of the parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul's, east of the Church tower. It is otherwise known as the Earl of Stradbroke's coach house.

The church wardens have stated that the Earl of Stradbroke's family coach was reversed into the coach house out of the weather. The horses were tied to posts outside the western end of the coach house with their hay nets secured to the walls . This is hidden in the photograph by the shrubbery but the hook rings are there.

The interior has original lancet windows and has been re- roofed in clay tile with ornate capped clay tiles to the ridge, with some retained original timbers, with the additional steels to support the brick entrance arch and stone buttresses.
